To Parents :

As parents, we understand the importance of providing the essentials to our children in order for them to live a long healthy successful life.   However, the foods you could be feeding and providing to your child, could be slowly decreasing their life expectancy while increasing their possibility of health problems, as they get older.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem that many American children are facing on a daily basis. Today, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 3 decades.

The purpose of this blog is to educate parents and guardians on the importance of daily physical activity associated with eating a healthy balanced diet.   It’s time we started to make childhood obesity a thing of the past!

Great calorie counter and fitness tracker app!

I recently found a great app for both iTunes and Android users!  The name of the app is Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal.  I personally use it, and love it!  It allows users to track food’s they consume by nutrition categories including calories, sugar, sodium, protein, fats etc.  It also allows users to track their fitness activity, so if you want to gain or lose weight it can keep you on track to your goal.  It is very easy to use and can be very beneficial in regards to managing food consumption.  When you finish eating something, you just search the item or scan it into the directory using its bar-code.  The nutrition info will be available and calculated on a daily basis.  For example, if you are trying to lose weight and only want to intake 2200 calories per day, each food item you eat will be added towards the 2200 calorie goal.  It will provide you with your total, so you can see whether you are on track towards your daily goal.  Click on the link below if you wantto check out the app site!

Dietary Recommendations for Healthy Children

One major contributor to a child becoming overweight or obese, is daily calorie intake.   If you consume more calories than you burn, you will end up gaining weight.  With more and more families needing both parents to work, or single parents working multiple jobs, children often times are left eating meals high in sodium, sugar, or saturated fats.  Combine these types of meals and a sedentary lifestyle and you have the perfect recipe for weight gain.   With weight gain, there are numerous health risks and problems that can occur.  Take a look at my vodcast to get more information about proper daily calorie amounts.  If you choose to read the script please click here.

How Accurate is BMI for Measuring Weight?

Children today are less active and spend much more time indoors connected to technology or a television.  I recently read in an article, by Katerina Tang, a food blogger for the Fair Food Network, which stated in 1990, no state in the US had an obesity rate over 14%. In 2010, 36 states had an obesity rate of at least 25% and 12 states had rates of 30% or higher. Now these statistics aren’t focusing on children, but the likelihood of overweight parents having overweight children, is pretty high. Unfortunately, much of it does have to do with genetics and heredity but parents and children need to understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, by practicing healthy eating habits and exercising regularly to avoid obesity.

Through a series of podcasts, I will be providing information on variety of topics including general information on childhood obesity, nutrition information, and exercise information to help fight the battle against childhood obesity. My first podcast focuses on measuring a child’s weight using the outdated practice of BMI, or body mass index.

Body Mass Index is not the most accurate measurement for determining a child’s weight category.  Many variables are not taken into consideration and can affect the outcome of the weight measurement.

If you want further information of how BMI is not the best measurement for children, please click on the Podcast link at the top of the menu bar and take a listen!
